Reflect some of the ways that you want to assess your students, i.e. monitor their level of understanding what you're teaching.
Students all show there understanding in differnt ways, and especially in middle school charecter education is just asn important if not (gasp) more important than acedemic education. With this in mind I want to be able to asses students on there acedmic performance, behavior and effort. In order to accuratly gauge this it is important to gather this information in as many ways as possible. A large portion of my assesment is informal. I asses students on effort and understanding both on homework and in class assighnments. When asking questions I feel it is important to not simply ask it, but say it, write it, demonstrate it and then say it again in differnt words whenever possible. I want to see the students understaning of the topic, not if he understands the way I phrase a question.
Describe your grading policy, i.e. how you will assign scores to represent performance. Explain why you are choosing to use this method. If you are continuing your CT's grading policy, explain what you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of this approach.
My grading policy is similar to my CT's but not identical. The rationale is two fold, the students shouldn't worry about figuring out another grading system for the 7 weeks or so that I am there. At the same time I want my grading to reflect me as an educator. With this in mind The basic frame is the same, that is grades are on a point system and traditional high stakes items are typically worth more points. But it is not identical as there is no predetermined point for each type of activity, allowing me the flexibility to grade as fitting to the assignment. Some Homework and classwork requires more effort and that should be acknowledged the same is true for tests and activities.
I often grade classwork and homework on a effort/completion scale. Full credit if you filled it out completely and progressively less as effort decreases, but provide comments on the content without it effecting the grade. I feel as though this rewards students for trying (character education) but helps assure that they receive the content education as well.
